‘Stars aligning’ for Jets-Packers Aaron Rodgers trade? Other veteran quarterbacks in the mix

Time for a quick roundup of the latest Aaron Rodgers rumors as the Green Bay Packers consider trading the four-time NFL MVP and the New York Jets shop for a new starting quarterback.

Per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones: “While the Jets will certainly take a long look at potentially trading for Rodgers, he’s not the only veteran quarterback the team is evaluating. According to sources, the Jets will be looking closely at Rodgers, Jimmy Garoppolo and Derek Carr. They won’t limit their search to just those three quarterbacks — and sources stress it’s still early in the process — but that’s where the focus will begin.”

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (via SNY): “The #Jets will explore Derek Carr, Aaron Rodgers & more. … My understanding is they’re going to leave no stone unturned, exploring every option. That starts with Derek Carr, probably the first quarterback to get traded — just based on his mid-February deadline for his fully-guaranteed money. … Some other options to consider: (Tennessee Titans quarterback) Ryan Tannehill, especially if he is released, (Los Angeles Rams quarterback) Baker Mayfield and a couple other veteran quarterbacks this offseason.”

Per the Boston Globe’s Ben Volin: “The stars are aligning for the Jets to acquire a veteran quarterback this offseason. The biggest buzz will be with Aaron Rodgers after the Jets just hired his former offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett, to the same role. … If the cap-strapped Jets want more of a value option, the obvious solution is Jimmy Garoppolo, who was with coach Robert Saleh in San Francisco and would be a nice upgrade over Zach Wilson (if Garoppolo can stay healthy). (Tom) Brady taking his talents to Gotham also can’t be discounted.”

The Jets-Aaron Rodgers rumors gained momentum last week when New York hired former Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett to replace Mike LaFleur as offensive coordinator.

Hackett previously served as the Packers offensive coordinator and had a good working relationship with the 39-year-old Rodgers.
